THE NUMBERS
-
According to the 2011-2012 National Survey of Children’s Health, more than 5 million children have had a parent incarcerated at some point in their lives, including 503,000 children in California.
-
Children with incarcerated parents are typically of color, under the age of 10, and living in low-income households.
-
Over 3,000 children under the age of 25 have parents in Alameda and San Francisco (SF) County jails on any given day.
-
Only 53% of children with parents in Alameda County jail and 48% of children with parents in SF County jail live in the same county as their parent’s jail location with another ~25% of children residing in a surrounding Bay Area county.
